At Ovingham Middle School our vision is to help children to develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners.  In mathematics we provide opportunities for all children to fulfil their potential through a commitment to high standards and excellence with an engaging, broad and rich curriculum.  The teaching and learning environment is shaped by an understanding of what children can achieve and by teaching that meets their needs as learners.

During key stage 2 pupils use the number system more confidently. They move from counting reliably to calculating fluently with all four number operations. They always try to tackle a problem with mental methods before using any other approach.  Pupils explore features of shape and space and develop their measuring skills in a range of contexts. They discuss and present their methods and reasoning using a wider range of mathematical language, diagrams and charts.

During key stage 3 pupils take increasing responsibility for planning and executing their work. They extend their calculating skills to fractions, percentages and decimals, and begin to understand the importance of proportional reasoning. They are beginning to use algebraic techniques and symbols with confidence. They generate and solve simple equations and study linear functions and their corresponding graphs. They begin to use deduction to manipulate algebraic expressions. Pupils progress from a simple understanding of the features of shape and space to using definitions and reasoning to understand geometrical objects. As they encounter simple algebraic and geometric proofs, they begin to understand reasoned arguments. They communicate mathematics in speech and a variety of written forms, explaining their reasoning to others. They study handling data through practical activities and are introduced to a quantitative approach to probability. Pupils work with increasing confidence and flexibility to solve unfamiliar problems. They develop positive attitudes towards mathematics and increasingly make connections between different aspects of mathematics.

A Curriculum Subject Overview is available for each year:

Long Term Plan

Our long term plan gives a strategic view of the curriculum-based approach to learning:

Parents Booklet

Our handy parents booklets provide information on what will be expected of learners as they develop through the year.

The summer booklets will be published nearer the time.

Calculation Policy

Our calculation policy has been devised to give pupils a consistent and
smooth progression of learning in calculations across the Key Stage 1 and 2 phases.

Useful Mathematics Websites

My Maths

Our subscription to MyMaths means that your child has his/her unique log in details, which allow him/her to access a wide range of games, activities, homework tasks and investigations. Teachers involved in your child’s maths learning can personalise the work that your child completes on the site according to the confidence levels at which he/she is working. By logging in, your child ensures that details relating to his/her performance are accessible to the teacher, who can use this to supplement the ongoing, day-to-day assessment of your child’s maths learning.

Click on the link below to get started, using log-in details provided by your teacher in order to find your very own area of the website…

MyMaths Update

MyMaths is now accessible via the Puffin Academy flash browser.

We are delighted to announce that MyMaths has been made available through Puffin Academy, allowing pupils and teachers to easily access MyMaths on most tablet and mobile devices, including iPads.

What is Puffin Academy?

Puffin Academy is a free mobile and tablet Flash browser. It is specifically designed for pupils, teachers and parents, as it always enforces site filtering by only allowing whitelisted educational websites to be accessed. It’s only for educational websites and fully supports Flash content, as well as videos on iPhone and iPad.

How do I access MyMaths through Puffin Academy?

To access MyMaths on your tablet or iPad, simply download the Puffin Academy App from the Apple or Android store to your device. Once downloaded, the quickest way to access MyMaths is to open the Puffin Academy browser and search for MyMaths in the search bar. You can also bookmark MyMaths.
