Ovingham Middle School’s U11 girls football team competed against St Alban’s RC Primary School in the final of the county cup.
St Alban’s started on the front foot and had Ovingham stuck in their own half for the first 5 minutes, whilst a couple of long range efforts were comfortably dealt with by goalkeeper Grace. Ovingham were struggling to keep possession of the ball, leading to a very scrappy 10 minutes with Ovingham conceding a lot of corners and free kicks. However, Ovingham started to pass the ball better and this lead to Lucy shooting just wide of the post. A few minutes later, Amy and Hannah combined well which lead to Lucy shooting over the bar. With 5 minutes left of the first half, St Alban’s were looking more dangerous with their attacking play but Eleanor and Amelie defended bravely. However, a great strike from 20 yards flew past Grace in the Ovingham goal to make it 1-0 to St Alban’s and this gave them a deserved lead at half time.
Second half, Ovingham started fast and looked a constant threat. 5 minutes into the second half, Amy shot wide whilst the St Alban’s goalkeeper pulled off a superb save to deny Lucy. Amelie, Eleanor and Ruby were keeping possession really well for Ovingham whilst Hannah and Evie defended superbly to block St Alban’s shots at goal. With 15 minutes left, Ovingham finally found the equalizer when Amy dribbled the ball forward from the half way line and scored a great solo goal.
OMS were now full of belief and were passing the ball brilliantly. The St Alban’s goalkeeper then pulled off another good save to deny Lucy, whilst Evie smashed a volley off the underside of crossbar. With 7 minutes to play, Ovingham were still full of energy and they were rewarded with a corner kick. Lucy delivered an accurate corner straight to Ruby who finished brilliantly into the far corner! A full deserved goal for Ruby who made constant recovery runs to defend the St Alban’s attacks. With 3 minutes to play, St Alban’s shot brilliantly from 20 yards and goalkeeper Grace pulled off a fantastic save to deny them. St Alban’s then had a corner and Ovingham brought every girl back to defend it. Evie cleared the ball and Lucy ran the length of the pitch and fired the ball into the top corner to make it 3-1! The referee blew for full time.
This was a fantastic, competitive game of football and the game was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Many thanks to St Alban’s for a great game played in good spirit. Girl of the game was awarded to Eleanor, for a superb defensive display.
Ovingham Middle School’s Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 girls football teams are both county champions for the 2018/2019 season. Well done girls, this is a fantastic achievement.
