Ovingham Middle School U13 girls took on Cramlington Learning Village in the Malcolm Berry County Cup final at Chantry Middle School. This was always going to be a big challenge for team as all but one of them play U12 football.
The game kicked off and Ovingham were immediately under huge amounts of pressure but Katherine, Anna and Millie defended amazingly well with help from goalkeeper Lois who was outstanding throughout. Ten minutes in, striker Molly’s strength and speed was causing chaos and she finished superbly after being played through on goal by Rose to make it 1-0 OMS. Both teams’ midfielders were having a great battle and this lead to a brilliant end to end game. Cramlington had two chances to score but they were superbly tipped over the bar from Lois, whilst Lillie cannoned a shot off the post at the other end and Molly fired wide. With 5 minutes left of the first half, Millie lined up a long throw and superb movement lead to Molly getting her second goal of the game to take Ovingham into half time with a 2-0 lead.
Despite being 2-0 up, the tie was far from over and Ovingham struggled to adapt to the hill and the sun in their eyes in the second half. Cramlington’s star player who is involved with England football training camps dribbled the ball past 4 of our players and scored to pull Cramlington back into the tie. 5 minutes later, Cramlington’s striker scored a great goal after a brilliant through ball to level the score and give Cramlington a lot of belief. However, a brilliant through ball from Emily allowed Molly to put their defence under a lot of pressure , which lead to Lillie and Rose combining well before Rose struck the ball into the top corner to put Ovingham 3-2 up. Cramlington never gave up and instantly drew level through their player of the match who scored again to keep the fans on edge in this thrilling game.
With the score at 3-3 , Molly got her deserved hat-trick for her tireless running when a ball over the opposition’s defence from Anna lead to a left footed finish. With less than 10 minutes left, Cramlington’s attackers were playing superbly and they scored a brilliant and deserved equalizer to make it 4-4 and the tie seemed to be heading towards extra time.
However, Lily scored a brilliant goal from 20 yards to give Ovingham a 5-4 lead! With 5 minutes to go, Ovingham were under constant pressure and the whole team were defending brilliantly from Cramlington’s corners whilst Lois pulled off another great save from a long range effort, tipping the shot over the bar. With the last kick of the game, a Cramlington free kick was destined for the top corner but Lois pulled off a ‘save of the season’ contender to tip the ball over the bar. The referee then blew for full time.
All of the squad have contributed and played amazing football through out all of the county cup fixtures and we are incredibly proud of them. Girl of the game was Lois for an exceptional performance in goal. Thank you to Cramlington Learning Village for a thrilling, competitive cup final which was played in great spirit.
Ovingham Middle School Year 6 Girls also have a county cup final, Monday 20th May against St Alban’s RC Primary School. Good luck girls!
Well done OMS!
