The winner and runners-up of the OCO Logo Competition were announced today in the KS2 assembly. The group who are organising this local orchard set our pupils the challenge of designing a logo for them to use in all their communication. As you would expect, the children stepped up to the plate and designed some wonderful, high-quality entries. Forty-five of these were displayed at the Apple Day Fair in the Reading Rooms on 20 October where people were asked to vote for their favourites. As a result of this, the winner was Daisy, who was presented with a certificate and a book voucher – well done Daisy. Eleven more pupils were presented with runner-up certificates: Niamh, Sophia, Phoebe, Alexander, James, Lois, Emma, Isla, William, Anna and Siri. Finally, Lucas was presented with a special award for the inspired choice of words on his design:
‘We are all different apples on the same tree’. We are indeed Lucas, well said.
During the assembly Mandy Roberts, from the OCO Group, explained where the orchard is, and what it is all about. There are several examples of community orchards locally now and, like the others, this one aims to create an open access orchard for the benefit of local people and wildlife. It will be managed organically, provide a place for recreation whilst offering opportunities to learn about horticulture and wildlife management. Fruit that grows on the trees each year will be available for local people to collect. It is situated next to the allotments just off The Village Green and the actual planting of the trees is Saturday 24 November.
