An afternoon with Kev F Sutherland.

Recently, Year 5 Art students had the opportunity to work with comics professional Kev  F. Sutherland.  Kev is a fabulous speaker and presenter basing his workshops on a lifelong career working in the comic-book industry, most notably drawing the Beano’s  front page ‘Dennis the Menace’ comic strip and some stints for Marvel (drawing ‘Doctor Strange’, ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Star Trek’ amongst others).

Kev is a force of nature and took the pupils through a whirlwind tour de-force of comic writing; from script to inked illustration.  Pupils began by collaborating on a group comic-book title and then developed a short one page ‘gag’ strip…at record speed!  With a rough script in place, the pupils had to develop a character and then draw their strips!

In parallel to the manic comic making ensuing, Kev took the time to draw a caricature of everyone in the room- an incredible feat of energy and professionalism from this comic book-pro. A lot of happy pupils left the afternoon workshop proudly holding their copy of the class comic-book and having met a real-life Marvel artist! A very special afternoon, from a truly exciting speaker.  As ‘The Doctor’ would say: ‘Fantastic!’
