Ovingham Middle School has become only the second school (of any kind) in Northumberland to achieve the Rights Respecting Schools Gold Award. This award is recognition of years of hard work affecting the whole-school culture and a testament to the efforts of staff and children.
Since 2015 we have been working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School. Having already achieved the Silver Award in July 2017, we had our Gold assessment visit from two Unicef UK assessors in October 2018. We have now learnt that we were successful – OMS is officially a Gold level Rights Respecting School.
Unicef’s report on the school states: ‘It is clear that children’s rights are embedded throughout, and integral to, the school’s vision and ethos… it was evident throughout the visit that pupils and adults place a great importance on children’s rights and that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is shaping all aspects of school life.’
