Year 8 pupils gave councillors a grilling as part of European Local Democracy Week. On Wednesday 17 October a panel of four Northumberland county councillors and two Prudhoe town councillors answered questions posed by OMS pupils. The whole of Year 8 participated in preparatory workshops – learning about democracy, in particular the work of local councils – before taking part in the Question Time-style panel discussion.
There was time for a wide range of questions, including some tough and challenging questions that drew out different perspectives from the panel. It helped pupils learn about democracy and citizenship, as part of our PSHE curriculum, and connected school with the the wider world of real, democratic decision-making. We are grateful to Northumberland county council’s democratic services department for helping make it happen.
