Art

At Ovingham Middle School, we feel visual literacy is an essential quality which complements all other aspects of a young person’s development.

We aim to offer pupils a range of activities and experiences which will allow them to develop their own skills, express their ideas or feelings, and engage with many forms of art. Pupils are encouraged to explore their own creative ideas and have confidence to try them out. Whilst developing and refining personal skills they are encouraged to comment on the art of others, using art from a range of times and cultures as inspiration for their own work.

Art lessons should be an enjoyable activity where discussion of ideas far beyond the objectives of the lesson can also take place. By examining Art created by significant Artists young people can gain a deeper understanding of how different cultures and generations have responded to their environment and circumstances.  Art in its many forms gives instant visual information, providing us with an opportunity to explore the past and present through another medium. We aim to promote an open minded approach and ensure that all pupils feel able to express individual responses, both orally in discussions and practically through their own Art work.
