Governors

The Governing Body

Ovingham Middle School

Ovingham Middle School is a successful school catering for young people aged 8 – 14, serving mainly the villages of Stocksfield, Wylam, Ovingham and Ovington and being a governor of the school is an important role which requires commitment and dedication.  Each member contributes to the work of the Governing Body in raising standards of achievement for all pupils.

The governing body consists of:

  • 2 Parent governors
  • 1 Local Authority governor
  • 1 Staff governor
  • 1 Head teacher
  • 7 Co-opted governors.

The three core strategic functions of a governing body are:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

The commitment from governors:

  • 2 termly governing body meetings averaging 2 / 3 hours
  • Additional Committee meetings that might involve school improvement / financial discussions / staffing issues / Property & buildings decisions / policy determination etc.
  • Specific issues that could involve a series of connected meetings of a confidential nature e.g. capability/disciplinary/complaint
  • Willingness to undertake induction and other specific training as required

The role of Governor can be hugely rewarding in terms of the impact that they can have on the outcomes for children as well as the opportunity to learn and develop new skills that can be of benefit beyond the school community.

I live in Stocksfield and I have two children who have attended Ovingham Middle School. My daughter has moved on to High School and my son is currently in Year 6.
My career has been in education, having previously taught science at Prudhoe High School and a Sixth form college in Durham. I am currently Head of Science programmes at the Foundation Centre, Durham University.
The Foundation centre is a widening participation initiative that provides opportunities for people who may not have considered studying at University. I also work closely with the School of Education, having recently completed a PhD researching language barriers in chemistry education.
I am an elected member of the Education Division Council and Chair of the Educational Techniques Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In this capacity I help develop new resources in chemistry education and inform education policy. I am also an OfQual subject specific expert and an A-level examiner for Chemistry.
In my spare time, I am a member of the Prudhoe Community Choir and join in with performances with the Stocksfield players.

Michael McNeill

I have been a parent governor for just over 4 years. I live in Ovingham, and have three children who all attended the school. My background is in technical businesses so I help the school with finance, staffing, and building related issues. I never cease to be impressed by how hard the staff work, by the high levels of attainment for all children at the school, and by the senior leadership team’s commitment to on-going continued improvement. The children certainly benefit educationally, but also from all the clubs, trips and support available to them while at the school.
