On Friday 15th of June a group of Ovingham School pupils went up to Ashington to watch their fellow class mate Sam smith (smithy) carry the torch. Lots of busses drove by with various parades promoting different companies then shortly after that Sam entered in style in an Olympic bus at his starting point. When the previous runner finished his leg of the relay he used the fire in his torch to light Sam’s torch. Sam drove down the street with a classy police escort to many cheers from the few hundred spectators. Sam smiled and grinned all throughout his amazing 400m and was greeted with a great reception from all of his friends and family at the finish point, despite the horrific whether this didn’t dampen people’s spirits and the significance of the day. Sam received many photos with his family and friends clutching the torch in his relay kit. You can see a video of Sam’s triumph on the BBC website under ‘torch relay’. Well done Sam!
